Does the Govt Want Middle-class Kids to be Plumbers, Electricians? | AT E16

Read the companion piece to this video on my substack. https://substack.com/@aunindyo India's Chief Economic Advisor says MBAs and Computer Science degrees are now over. It is time for the young to gain 'trade skills'. And what trade skills did he talk about? Plumber. Electrician. Welder. Even if he meant industrial hands-on operational jobs, they don't pay as much as white-collar jobs anywhere in the world — even in the developed world or China. Even if starting pay is similar, within a few years, white-collar professionals end up making much more than people who have trade skill-related jobs. And peak pay in white-collar jobs is 10 times more than the highest a tradesperson can earn. So, is this what the middle class has to settle for now — after spending lakhs on their children's education? Note: The government provides trade skills training in various Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs). A recent report showed that more than half of those who graduated from ITIs couldn't find any work. https://dgt.gov.in/sites/default/file...
