Mahler: Symphony No 6 (1960) Scherchen/Leipzig NEW EDITION

Gustav Mahler Symphony No 6 "Tragic" 1. Allegro energico, ma non troppo. Heftig aber markig 2. Andante moderato 3. Scherzo.Wuchtig 4. Finale. Allegro moderato-Allegro energico Hermann Scherchen, conductor Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra Recorded Live on October 1/6, 1960 Leipzig Radio Hall This certainly one of the most controversial of Scherchen's Mahler recordings, and justly so. It is fast: insanely fast, and the intensity is at 11 on a scale of 10. We offer it in a new edition with improved sound. Scherchen, alas, did not leave a recording of the 6th symphony with the complete score. The present recording is from a live performance. In the 1950s and 60s a conductor was blazing new trails with Mahler's lesser-known symphonies, and consensus was very different than it is today. The symphony itself puzzled earlier audiences, and the origin of the "Tragic" title is unclear. Mahler composed the symphony during one of the happiest times in his life. There has also been a controversy about the order of the inner movements. The present edition is in the more accepted order of "Andante-Scherzo". Although critics and audiences were unconvinced at first, some like Webern and Berg saw the 6th as a masterpiece. The symphony has become very popular over the last 50 years or so. 24-bit Full Fidelity Remastering (2026): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio In order for our posts to remain commercial-free, we do not monetize on this channel.
