Mahler: Symphony No 7 "Song of the Night" 1953 Scherchen
Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 7 in B minor "Song of the Night" I. Langsam – Allegro risoluto, ma non-troppo (0:08) II. Nachtmusik I (21:08) III. Scherzo (35:38) IV. Nachtmusik 2 (44:34) V. Rondo Finale (58:06) Hermann Scherchen, conductor Vienna State Opera Orchestra Recorded in 1953 at Mozart-Saal of the Konzerthaus, Vienna There are two recordings of Scherchen conducting the Mahler 7th. His earliest recording from 1953 is offered here on this channel for the first time. Don't worry, we'll get around to the 1965 Toronto recording too. Both are noteworthy and this version generated plenty of interest in the fifties when it was released on Westminster. The interesting thing about Scherchen's Mahler is that it is either the best performance, or the worst; sometimes he seems to just get through the score without much sensibility. Then sometimes he gives the music the insights that make one say. "Where has this been all my life?" The present recording is certainly the latter for me. I've never heard a better 7th than this. Westminster recordings were noted for their high quality. Nothing has been here done other than to bring it to Full Fidelity. 24-bit Full Fidelity Restoration (2026): Paul Howard - The Yucaipa Studio In order for our posts to remain commercial-free, we do not monetize on this channel.
