Wing Chun Blocking - General Principles

Block the punch! Anything else is a bonus. Blocks are either - using Jocko Willink’s terminology - effective or ineffective. If a block doesn’t work under pressure, it is ineffective. If a block is effective, then (and only then) do the following principles apply: Good Position 1. Aim to control the opponent’s elbow. If the opponent’s elbow is out of range, go as much along their forearm (toward their elbow) as possible 2. Forward intent - direct your energy through their core where possible (never in another direction) 3. Face the point of contact (the point at which your hand makes contact with the opponent’s attack limb) where possible/appropriate Speed 1. Be direct: go straight for the attacking limb! Don’t sweep, or swing the arm 2. Hands lead (not arms) 3. Hands first. Only move feet if required 4. Keep shoulders fixed in place Elbow structure. Elbows should be: 1. Obliquely downward (there are exceptions) 2. Two fists from the chest 3.
