If you’ve ever played or watched hockey, then an indoor soccer game is very similar in game-play. Boarded soccer is usually indoors on a turf field with boards around it entirely. The same ball that would be used on a normal soccer field is also used here. The nets are about half the size of 11 v 11 soccer nets. How large the field is determines the number of players, but just like hockey, it is usually 5 field players and one goalkeeper per team. That makes it 5 v 5 indoor soccer or 6 v 6 indoor soccer if you include goalkeepers. Normally, this means a team’s formation is a 2-2-1 where they have 2 defenders, 2 midfielders, and one forward. There are unlimited substitutions during the game and many leagues allow substitutions on the fly where a player can sub out and a bench player can go on while the play is still occurring. Neither players entering the field or players departing the field may participate in play when they are on the field at the same time. And of course, teams can do substitutions anytime there is a stoppage in play from a foul, the ball going out of bounds, or a goal. What shoes to wear are usually dependent on the turf type. On a boarded field with hardwood, plastic, or astro turf, flats are best. On a boarded field with regular turf, flats, indoor turf shoes, or cleats are allowed. There is usually only one referee, and they control the scoreboard, clock, and ref the game. Games are usually 50 minutes long with twenty 25 halves and a 5-minute halftime. Should there be a foul against your team in the opposing team’s penalty area, then a penalty kick can be awarded even if the time on the clock has run out. You can even pass off the indoor soccer walls, making it seem like you have an extra teammate when on offense. Anytime that the ball goes into the netting along the sidelines or out of bounds along the benches, the team who did not last touch the ball is awarded a direct kick from the spot where the ball went out. Except, when the defending team last touches the ball before it goes over their net. Then it results in a corner kick on the side of the net it went out on. Goal kicks are taken from either dot in front of the net. Goalkeepers can only use their hands on the ball inside their penalty area. Leagues differ on their rules when the ball contacts the netting above the field. Most leagues allow play to continue. However, some leagues reward an indirect kick for where the ball hit the netting. Free kicks require all opponents to be at least 6 yards away when taken. Similarly, most leagues do not allow slide tackling, but some do. Turf can really tear off your leg skin, so I’d advise against sliding. An indirect free kick awarded to the attacking team in its opponent's penalty area shall be taken at the top of the arc unless a penalty kick has been awarded. Penalty kicks are taken from the dot I the penalty area. Depending on where you play boarded soccer, refs may use penalty boxes, just like in hockey. Penalty boxes are usually use for 2-minute penalties for very flagrant fouls. However, unlike in hockey, you can take a free kick from wherever the foul was committed in boarded soccer, so you don’t often see players in the penalty box.
