So, “Fantastic Four: First Steps” just released, and I loved it. The entire cast is phenomenal, Pedro Pascal is perfect as Reed, and I especially love the 60’s retrofuturist world that it takes place in. I truly believe that the Fantastic Four is one of the most important superhero comics of all time, and it’s taken a lot of attempts to get them right in live action — ironically four of them — and they haven’t really been given their dues. So I’m happy to say that director Matt Shakman was able to bring Marvel’s First Family to life in a way that showcases just how special they are and leading perfectly to the future with Doomsday and Secret Wars. I have my issues with the movie overall, but you can’t deny that the project as a whole was made as a love letter to the original source material and the creative team that made the Fantastic Four what they are today.
