STURTON LE STEEPLE: Bassetlaw Parish #44 of 66
Next up in Bassetlaw is a delightful village which has links to the Romans. This one literally means the "town or homestead on the street" - the street in question being the Roman Road that linked Lincoln to Doncaster. The road bridged or forded the River Trent at a places which we know now as Littleborough, but back in Roman times was known as Segelocum. A turnpike, this road had tolls, and plenty of them as well. You won't find any now but it used to cost something along the lines of 9d per horse if you travelled along it. The toll houses are still here though, one in particular which we see right at the end of the video lays in this parish between the main village and Littleborough. There is another connection to the Pilgrim Fathers in this one as well. Pastor John Robinson, the man who founded the religious group was born here, and as such the village is another one that is on the Pilgrim Fathers Trail, something we've seen before in Scrooby and Austerfield. They are not the only famous people to have connections with the village - George Fenton, the poet and his son were also resident here. This place nowadays has a pub, a large attractive (yet, also deep) pond, a school which has been here for quite a while and remains a church school to this day, a small post office, an independent butchers shop, and a massive painting of the village in one of the bus stops which the schoolchildren here must surely be proud of! A linear village, this one was longer and much more interesting than I expected. This is STURTON LE STEEPLE. **** My name is Andy.
