You Have Forsaken Your First Love “But I have this against you, that you have forsaken the love you had at first” (Revelation 2:4). The apostle John wrote seven different messages to seven different churches. The first message was addressed to the first church, called Ephesus, a church that symbolically represents the early Church, the church made up of the apostles and the first Christians in history. This church was characterized by its unwavering faithfulness, its commitment to the cause of the gospel, and its willingness to be persecuted, imprisoned, beaten, and even martyred for love of Jesus. It preached His word everywhere and at all times, and it was a church moved by the Holy Spirit toward the completion of its mission. One characteristic that can be attributed to it was that it shared its possessions with others so that no one would go hungry. The love they had for one another was a distinctive mark among them, especially in their care for widows and orphans. What a powerful and exemplary church! However, as time went on, love, its most important characteristic, gradually faded until it finally ceased to be its ideal. The apostle John acknowledges his work, his dedication, and his passion for the mission, but tells him that he has abandoned his first love, something that can happen to anyone at any time. Perhaps, when you first met the Lord, your love for Him made everything possible and easy. You participated in church, preached to others, performed acts of charity, and your work for Jesus was tireless. But perhaps you began to notice that not everyone was as committed as you were. You saw that even the leaders said one thing and did another, and your love slowly began to diminish, to the point that now you only did the bare minimum. The passion of your first love was gone. My dear friend, if this is your situation, this message is for you. If this is not your situation, this message encourages you to continue in your first love. It's easy to get discouraged, but those who love Jesus aren't in the Church to please anyone, nor to follow the example of others as imperfect as themselves. Jesus is the personal example, and his love should fill your heart because, after all, happiness lies in serving with love, since it doesn't matter what others do or don't do because the commitment is to God. Do you want to ask God to help you continue loving at all times? Only he can teach us to love as he loves, because everything is by his grace.
