It was originally released in North America in June 1991 and in the PAL region the following month. The game follows the story of an anthropomorphic hedgehog named Sonic as he seeks to defeat Doctor Eggman, a scientist who has imprisoned animals in robots and stolen the magical Chaos Emeralds. Sonic the Hedgehog's gameplay involves collecting rings to gain lives, and features a simple control scheme with jumping and attacking controlled by a single button. Development began in 1990, when Sega commissioned its AM8 production team to create a game featuring a mascot for the company. After considering several suggestions, they settled on a blue hedgehog with spikes along its head and spine, and renamed themselves "Sonic Team" to match the character. Sonic the Hedgehog, designed to have fast-paced gameplay, was influenced by the Super Mario series created by Shigeru Miyamoto. The game uses an innovative technique that allows Sonic's sprite to roll along a curved stage, originating from a demo created by programmer Yuji Naka. The music was composed by Masato Nakamura of the J-pop band Dreams Come True. The game was well received by critics, being considered one of the best in history, with praise given to its visual effects, audio, and gameplay. It was also commercially successful, establishing the Genesis/Mega Drive as one of the key consoles of the 16-bit era, allowing it to compete with Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The game also received several ports and inspired the creation of several clones, spawning a successful franchise in the following years, as well as adaptations for other media. Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2D side-scrolling platform game, whose gameplay centers on Sonic's ability to run at high speeds through levels that incorporate springs, slopes, high drops, and vertical loops. The levels also feature hazards in the form of robots ("badniks" in Western manuals), inside which Dr. Eggman has imprisoned animals. Destroying a robot releases the animal inside, but this is not necessary to complete the game. The player must avoid rows of sharp spikes, falling into bottomless pits, being crushed by moving walls and platforms, and death by drowning (which can be avoided by breathing air bubbles periodically released by vents). Sonic's main attack is his own spin, when curled up into a ball and spinning rapidly (causing damage to enemies and some obstacles). The attack can be performed by the player jumping or rolling on the ground.
