The game marked the debut of rival Shadow. At the end of the same year, Sega released a remake of the game for Nintendo GameCube in Japan, titled Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and then released abroad the following year. In 2012, the game was re-released for digital download on various platforms, with graphics remastered for high definition. A PlayStation 3 version arrived on the PlayStation Network on October 2, followed by Xbox Live on Xbox 360 on October 5, and finally on Steam on November 19. The Battle version was sold separately as Downloadable Content (DLC) Sonic Adventure 2 is a platform game with the same basic principles as predecessors. Throughout the stages there are rings, which prevent defeat if attacked (excepting in the stages with Tails and Eggman, in which the player has an energy bar that the rings help to recharge). There are various bubbles scattered, with rings, two types of shield (a regular and a magnetic one that attracts rings), temporary invincibility, extra lives, temporary acceleration and a special one that destroys nearby enemies. The stages of Sonic and Shadow are traditional platforms, with sliding rails and bars to rotate and boost upwards. The abilities of both include "accelerating" standing in the same place (spin dash), running over a row of rings (light dash), and skipping consecutively on enemies. Sonic can also bounce on the ground to jump higher. The phases with Tails and Eggman have both within wicks, and are more based on firing. You can lock the crossbar at up to 15 targets for a short time, punch nearby enemies, and the wicks can be equipped with gliders to drop smoothly. The stages with Knuckles and Rouge are based on hunting, looking for pieces of the Emerald Master, Chaos Emeralds, or keys. A radar beeps and changes color depending on the proximity of the item sought (from green to yellow to red). Both have the ability to glide, climb walls, dig and swim (Knuckles can get an artificial respirator to be able to swim as much as they want), and can take an upgrade to see invisible items. After being confused with Shadow, who stole a Chaos Emerald on the bank of Central City, Sonic is captured by G.U.N. Sonic escapes from the G.U.N. helicopter. while flying over the city, and flees using a piece of metal as a snowboard. After escaping from the police and military, Sonic confronts a robot, and meets Shadow, who escapes using Chaos Control. Sonic is recaptured and taken to Prison Island. At the same time, Knuckles is harassed by a thief, Rouge, who wants to steal the Master Emerald. While they both fight, Eggman grabs the emerald, but realizing that it is being taken, Knuckles punches it, breaking it to pieces. Knuckles then hunts down the fragments of the Emerald.
