1951 Smiths Enfield Westminster Chimes Mantel Clock

My latest thrift shop find, a large Westminster chiming mantel clock by Smiths Enfield of England, made in 1951. Although MCM chiming clocks aren't really my thing, I decided to buy this one as a rescue project, as there were several things wrong with it. Most urgently, the movement was only attached to the case by two screws, so the first order of business was finding some new ones to make sure it was properly mounted and not hanging on its centre arbor. The movement itself was in desperate need of a cleaning and oiling, so that was also taken care of, with noticeable improvement. I also replaced the dreadful plastic-tipped existing chime hammers with proper leather-tipped ones from a spare Smiths Enfield movement. Plastic hammers produce an absolutely awful tone, and have no business being on any chime clocks before 1960 in my opinion. Finally, the top-most chime rod sounded quite harsh and edgy, so I filed the bass of it to help add a little more shimmer to match the rest. As of now, the clock is ticking, chiming, and striking as it should. I will be testing it for some time yet, and will eventually put it up for sale online.
