Stone did not rot and remained, while wood, hides, and fabrics simply rotted away. A stick dropped in the forest loses its shape in half a year, but a pebble next to it endures for a million years. This single, trivial difference created the entire Stone Age in our minds. Archaeologists call this the 'tyranny of the tangible.' It is the illusion of believing that only what survives and can be grasped is real. This video brings to light a few pieces of wood that miraculously survived in that vanished world. A wooden board polished and shaped by humans 780,000 years ago, a structure made of interlocked logs before modern humans even appeared, a wooden spear from a hunting ground 300,000 years ago that lacked a single stone arrowhead, a wooden boat rowed to an island beyond the horizon that was not even visible, and even a 10,000-year-old wooden face brought back to life by a swamp.
