Exclusive Audi TT content, behind the scenes, and more on our Patreon / whybuy Ever hear that Kobe Bryant was inspired to design his first basketball shoe on this car? It’s true, the Mark 1 Audi TT had a pretty big impact on car buyer’s, but it also had a big impact in the car industry. Most importantly, the Audi TT represented a shift for the brand, one that would show the world they were capable of making a true dedicated 2 door sports car. 00:00 Audi TT Introduction 03:27 Audi TT origins 07:15 Revolutionary design 14:55 VR6 engine 17:52 Audi TT major problem 19:40 DSG automatic transmission 21:12 TT modifications 25:17 Interior of the Audi TT 33:37 Price for used Audi TT 37:17 Extras and Outtakes It’s been 26 years since the TT originally debuted and if you look at the TT, it’s aged very well. You have to remember what most cars looked like in 1996, few if any came even close to this iconic design. First off, ever notice how the bumpers on the TT are flush with the cars design? This was something that made the Audi stand out in a big way. For the most part, European markets never witnessed a car with the rear and front bumpers flush with the cars profile. It’s easy to that this for granted but at the time, few cars looked like this, and a lot of cars today, copied many design features from the TT. The taillights were also integrated into the body design and they seamlessly flow with the curves of the body. Instead of using an ugly reflective strip on the side of the car, the TT designers made every part of the taillight which wasn’t a light, reflective material. Clever way to preserve the cars design. Wheel arches are another styling point for this car, at the time, most cars just blended wheel arches with the fenders but the TT had these larger arches, much bigger more aggressive and the stick out, in a good way. Next time you look at modern cars, watch for this, it’s still copied by a lot of cars today. So why do people say this isn’t a true sports car? Unlike say, the Porsche Boxter, which from the ground up was made to be a sports car, the Audi TT platform was based on a modular chassis design. Used by the Golf, Jetta, and Beetle, the VW A4 platform was a way to lower costs, where the same chassis could be used across multiple cars. So no, it wasn’t originally intended to be just a sports car, but the car is still great to drive and most cars today are based on a modular chassis design to help make these cars more accessible. Engine In its original form, the TT came with a 1.8T 4 cylinder which was easily tunable and could be paired to a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic. Stock it was a little underpowered, so it was no surprise that the later entry of the TT came with a VR6 naturally aspirated 6 cylinder that gave a bump in power from 180hp to 247hp! Keep in mind there was also a 4 cylinder 1.8T variant which produced 225 hp, and while the 1.8T is more sought after for the higher mod ceiling, the V6 VR6 sounds so much better! Issues with the Audi TT So what are the Problems with the Mark 1 TT? Despite it’s futuristic design it had one critical flaw...
