Seven Generations at the Apiary: Standard Tatarstan Honey Since Tsarist Russia Gaziz Zaripov is a hereditary beekeeper, continuing the work begun in 1860 by his great-grandfather, Mezhit-babai. Back then, in the village of Malaya Yelga in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, the first three hives were built. Today, the apiary has over 200, tended by Central Russian bees of the Tatar population. Gaziz was once afraid of bees—as a child, they stung him 15 times a day. But his love for the craft prevailed: now his honey is highly prized even by the Rais of Tatarstan at business exhibitions. He plans to turn the apiary into a tourist attraction: preserving authentic Tatar hives, demonstrating the work of peaceful bees, and introducing visitors to the world of real honey.
