Life in a dying village in Russia, with only one street and a few houses, no shops or schools

In Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, there's a small village called Kasai. It has only one street. There are no social facilities: no school, no kindergarten, not even a store, let alone a mosque. There's only one club, where we were met by the head of the village council, Khalil Zakirov. He said that only 56 people live in Kasai, half of whom came to greet us at the club. "We really love visitors," he said. They told us the village's history. It turns out that due to the dwindling number of children, the village school was closed in 2008. Currently, three children from Kasai attend secondary school in the neighboring village of Kadybash, including the Zakirovs' youngest daughter, Zalina. Three generations of the Zakirov family live in the village. Seventy-year-old Minzilya apa and Rakhimzyan aby live with their son Rishat and daughter-in-law Aigul. There are two other sons who have left home: one lives in Kazan and the other in Izhevsk. "We're already grandparents ourselves," said Rishat, "we already have two grandchildren. I work as a gas worker, and Aigul works as a deputy paramedic in the neighboring village of Kadybash. The Zakirov family runs a large farm, keeping livestock, chickens, geese, and a large vegetable garden. They spend all day pottering around the yard. Minzilya apa said she's the one in charge of the kitchen, and the children work in the yard. Rakhimzhan abyi has been recovering from a stroke; he spends most of his time at rest.
