The wood pigeon (Columba palumbus Linnaeus, 1758) is a species of bird in the Columbidae family [2]. It is the largest, most common, and most widespread pigeon species in Europe. It is also known as the wood pigeon. The wood pigeon is 40 to 42 cm long and, therefore, substantially larger than the pigeon (Columba livia). Its wingspan ranges from 75 to 80 cm and it can weigh from 460 to 570 grams. The sexes resemble each other: the head and back are bluish, the tail and wingtips are dark. The chest is a slightly lighter pink-grey color. A typical feature are the white spots on the neck, which, however, do not form a ring. The neck is greenish in color. During flight, white transverse bands can be seen on the upperside of the wings, which are the main distinguishing feature from similar species and are called common pigeon mirrors and stock doves.
