Surrounded Islands: "Pink Day" Arrives

1983: Wrapping and Weather On May 4, or "P-Day," Christo's volunteers fanned out across Biscayne Bay, stretching and stitching the bright pink fabric that made up "Surrounded Islands." Windy weather called a halt to the day's operations before sunset. This clip includes an airborne WTVJ "Live Eye" report by Robyn Carter and surface-level coverage by Michael Putney and Nick Bogert. The stories include at least one moment of high drama: A breeze slipped under the pink fabric on one of the islands, causing an air bubble that Putney described as "...an unruly pink whale -- Moby Pink!" Also included: interviews with Jeanne-Claude, project volunteers, curious Miamians, and briefly, Christo himself, along with coverage of a Christo-themed cocktail and souvenir sales.
