Despite regulations, knowledge, and alternatives, the iron subframe is still widely used today (2019). It should have died out long ago, but that's not the case. That's why I wanted to write this article; we'll see what it is, where it's used, and why. Ready? Let's get started What is a subframe? Before UNI standards gave it the unequivocal name of COUNTERFRAME, in some areas of Italy the subframe was (and still is) also called: framework subframe framemate countermask It is an element used to frame the window opening during the construction of a building. It is very common in Italy but not so common in other countries, such as Germany and Austria, where window frames are traditionally installed "dry" without the use of a subframe. Its main function is therefore to delimit the window opening to the project dimensions and to allow for plastering and/or smoothing of the insulation. The advantage of the subframe is that the windows can be installed when the construction is almost complete, greatly reducing the risk of damage during plastering, insulation, screeding, etc. The disadvantage is the additional cost of the element and the need for an additional airtight joint, in this case the primary joint, which must also ensure vapor permeability on the inside, thermal and acoustic insulation in the middle, and impermeability to vapor and driving rain on the outside. Of course, let's not forget the mechanical fastening. In Italy, it's almost unthinkable to build a new building without this element. I've known designers who have tried, but it was an ordeal because almost all the workers (in many cases poorly qualified) are not accustomed to respecting our work as window and door installers and ruin the frame installed on the construction site before it's even finished. The mistake of installing the iron subframe Despite regulations, knowledge, and alternatives, the iron subframe is still widely used today (2019).
