Reading Crisis in Schools Examined: Teachers Blame the System for Illiteracy

“To read when you cannot read is painful.” Yes, and with 54% of American adults reading at or below grade 6 level and 21% of adults being functionally illiterate (see video from 07:22), it is no wonder so many students never developed a love for reading at a very young age. It also explains why many adults cannot help their kids and blame the teachers! Students who were not taught through phonics to read are forced to acquire coping mechanisms and by the time they reach high school are too embarrassed to admit that they were not properly taught to read, and then say they hate reading. Today’s literacy crisis didn’t appear overnight but is the result of years of disastrous education policy, wishful teaching trends, and students being passed along without mastering the basics of reading.
