This Rath Yatra was started by Swami Madhusudananda, the founder of Sri Sri Vrindavan Chandrajee Math, between approximately 1735 and 1740. In the feudal society of that time, this Vaishnava Math was not only a religious center, but also a powerful means of building a casteless communist society. Social Revolution and Barwari Puja [03:13] Guptipara can be called a laboratory or 'incubator' of social change in 18th century Bengal. It was under the influence of this monastery that the first universal or "Barwari" Durga Puja of Bengal was started in Guptipara in 1790, challenging the monopolistic dominance of the landlords, where 12 friends organized the puja by collecting donations. But the first foundation stone for taking the festival out of the confines of a specific family and into the hands of the common people was laid through the Rath Yatra. Size and Material: The height of the Rath is 36 feet and its base is 34 feet. Its main frame is made of very strong shala wood and its 16 wheels are made of high-density acacia wood, which can withstand the friction of mud and stones [05:40]. Participation of women: There are 4 ropes of 300 feet in front to pull the chariot, out of which one rope is reserved entirely for women [05:49]. Safety and science: After the death of the head of the monastery, Dandiswami Prithananda, in 1873, after being crushed by the wheels of the chariot, the then Samajpatis decided to reduce the number of peaks of the chariot from 13 to 9 [08:05]. As a result, the center of gravity of the chariot is lowered and the risk of the chariot overturning on the mud road is reduced. This is a wonderful historical example of giving priority to human safety over religion. Rituals and Bhandara Loot [09:27] The festival begins with a Snan Yatra on Jaishthya Purnima. Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra travel about one and a half kilometers in a chariot to their aunt's house (Gundicha Bati). Currently, the structure of this wooden chariot, which is about three and a half centuries old, has become quite weak. For the sake of safety, it is now kept in an iron cage. It is currently under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the local administration.
