Geographical location and naming history of Boni Camp: Location: Boni Camp is a highly sensitive ecosystem located in the extreme south of the Sundarbans, at the estuary of the Bay of Bengal. It is located near Kalas Dwip under the South 24 Parganas Forest Division. Naming: Its original name was 'Sundarkathi Eco Conservation Camp'. Later in 2003, renowned writer Buddhadev Guha changed its name to 'Boni Camp'. 2. Maze and major confusion on the route: Khaikhali name error: The main launch ghat to reach Boni Camp is named 'Kaikhali' or 'Khaikhali'. However, a common mistake is made by GPS users, because there is an urban area called 'Khaikhali' near Dumdum in Kolkata. The real launch ghat is a remote fishing village located about 80 km south of Kolkata. River route challenges: On the way to Boni Camp, one has to cross huge estuaries like Matla and Thakurani. Being close to the sea, there are reverse currents and dangerous whirlpools. Therefore, to ensure safety, it is mandatory to use a powerful heavy launch with a 4 or 6 cylinder engine instead of a regular boat. Difference in route map: If you go directly from Jharkhali or Khaikhali, it takes three and a half to five hours. On the other hand, if you go from Ishwarkhali, it takes about 8 hours, but this route goes through the core zone of the Sundarbans (past Sajnekhali, Sudhanyakhali, Dobanki Watch Tower), so you get a chance to see the entire forest in depth. 3. Main attractions of Boni Camp: 50-foot high concrete watch tower: This is the tallest watch tower in the Sundarbans. Strict rules and restrictions: The Sundarbans has been declared a completely plastic-free zone and there is a provision of a fine of Rs. 2000 for keeping a single usable plastic. Playing loudspeakers inside the forest, flying drones or using camera flash while taking pictures of wildlife at night is completely prohibited (the animals' eyes are temporarily blinded by the flash light). It is mandatory to have an authorized guide or armed forest guard with you when you go to the camp. It is worth noting that according to government rules, the entry of tourists and fishermen into the Sundarbans is completely prohibited from June 1 to August 31 every year due to the breeding season of wild animals. 6.
