Exploring the Abandoned Goodrich Middel School

Closed down in 2008-2009 school year, this "troublesome" property remains an eyesore for the surrounding community for over a decade. The building is privately owned by Gooden Faith Community Center. It was ordered to be demolished in January of this year by the Vacant Commercial or Industrial Building Appeals Board. Last year, the City of Akron applied for funding from the state to help with the backlog of properties in the city needing to be torn down. Recently, Governor DeWine announced nearly $50 million in grant funding across the state through the Ohio Brownfield Remediation Program and Building Demolition and Site Revitalization Program, and this included many sites here in Akron. This is outstanding news for our community but unfortunately because Goodrich Middle School wasn’t added to the demolition list until this year, it was not included in our application for funding and is not included in this grant award. The city remains committed to tearing down blighted and dangerous structures and that includes Goodrich Middle School when funding becomes available.
