It is one of the most impressive fortifications of Thrace, dominating over the passage leading from the plain of Evros to the hinterland of the Rhodope Mountains. The image that the visitor sees is stunning: three majestic medieval towers rise intact over time. Their architecture follows the standards of the late Byzantine period, with strong stonework and layers of bricks. The towers are four-sided, two-storey, with arched windows and battlements, testifying to an advanced defense technology that combined visual contact with absolute fortification power. Built in the 13th to 14th centuries, the castle was not just an observatory. It was the seat of a powerful garrison that controlled the trade routes and movements of the troops in Thrace. According to the sources, it is directly connected to the family of Gatelouzoi, the Genoese rulers who sealed the history of the region, making the castle a strategic hub between East and West.
