To the west of the Strymon River estuary, next to the old Thessaloniki-Kavala highway, stands one of the best-preserved Byzantine towers in Macedonia: the Tower of Apollonia. Built on a seaside cliff, it overlooks Orfanou Bay, offering a unique view of the Aegean Sea. The tower most likely dates back to the 14th century, around 1370. Although its name refers to ancient Apollonia, its location is historically identified with the fortified settlement that controlled the coastal route to Constantinople. The tower was not a standalone structure, but was surrounded by a fortified enclosure, traces of which can still be seen today. Its purpose was to monitor the sea routes and protect the region from raids by pirates and enemy fleets during the late Byzantine period. The tower's architecture is a fine example of Byzantine engineering. It is a three-story building with a rectangular floor plan. Its masonry consists of rubble masonry with rows of bricks, a technique that gives it strength and a distinctive aesthetic. The Tower of Apollonia stands there as a silent witness to the Byzantine defensive line.
