Why the US Bombed a Railway Bridge 900 Miles From the Gulf

Three days ago the US struck a railway bridge in Golestan Province, in the northeast of Iran, 900 miles from the Gulf and 900 miles from where the actual fighting is happening. It connects the ports of India in the south, up through Iran, into Russia, and across to China. Iran is the spine of this entire corridor. Remove Iran from the map and India cannot reach Russia by land, Russia cannot reach the Indian Ocean by land, and China's overland access to the Middle East becomes much harder. So when the US bombed the Golestan bridge, in my analysis they did not just destroy a piece of infrastructure. They cut a nerve in a supply chain that China, Russia, and India are all depending on. In game theory this is called signaling, an action that carries a message beyond its physical effect. The signal is that the US can reach anywhere in Iran, that it understands the overland strategy China is using to escape the Malacca Dilemma, and that the cost of protecting Iran is rising.
