The 'Hated' British Army Truck That Every Soldier Complained About But Absolutely Refused To Die
The AT105 Saxon was the British Army's most hated armoured personnel carrier. Soldiers called it the "armoured bread van," General Dannatt called it "quite useless," and every infantryman who sat in the back had a complaint. Cramped, blind, top-heavy, deafening, and built on a Bedford truck chassis. It looked like a delivery van in a steel coat. And yet no British crew was ever killed inside one. Built by GKN Sankey in 1976 as a cheap Cold War battle taxi for BAOR reinforcement, the Saxon was designed to race infantry from the Channel ports to the inner-German border if the Soviets attacked. That war never came. Instead, the Saxon fought in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner, survived anti-tank mines in Bosnia during Operation Grapple, patrolled Basra in Iraq, and ended up in Ukrainian hands fighting the exact enemy it was designed for. 577 entered British service. Over 850 were built. 75 were sold to Ukraine and are still fighting today. This is the full story of the vehicle every soldier hated and nobody could kill. If you served with the Saxon or rode in one, drop your story in the comments. Was it really as bad as they say, or did it save your life? Every week we tear apart one British war machine and tell the story nobody else covers.
