Why This 'Foreign' French Desert Truck Became The Modern SAS Patrol Vehicle Britain Never Built
In 1996 Britain's SAS ordered 20 French ACMAT VLRA desert trucks because no British factory could build what the regiment needed. The Special Air Service needed a long-range mothership to carry fuel, water and ammunition alongside its Land Rover 110 Desert Patrol Vehicles on deep operations. The Unimogs were ageing. Land Rover had nothing with the range. The ACMAT VLRA offered 1,600 km range, a 2.5-tonne payload, a Perkins turbodiesel, locking differentials, Michelin runflat tyres and 25 years of proven French Foreign Legion combat across Chad, Djibouti and Central Africa. Britain's most secretive regiment bought French and told nobody. In November 2001 those VLRAs deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Trent, the largest SAS action since World War II. 120 men, 36 vehicles, one al-Qaeda compound 250 miles from the nearest friendly base. The ACMAT trucks carried everything the column needed. Four SAS wounded. Zero killed. This video covers the full story from David Stirling's armed jeeps in 1942 through the Pink Panthers to the VLRA and the Supacat Jackal that replaced it.
