It’s Great To Be Back! 🌍 In A Place I’ve Never Been
Days 108-109. 46km (78561kms 7yrs) After a couple of weeks with my dad in Tunis and further south in Tunisia, it was time at last to set out around Tunisia. Nomad’s hostel had proved a great place to stay; with a garage I met several cyclists there, plus one motorcyclist. I was envious of the French cyclists who - having fixed a visa from their home country - had been able to arrive in Tunisia from Algeria.. As always after an extended break everything takes that bit longer while I get back in routine. But I didn’t have a big day planned; I was meeting a fellow cyclist in Carthage just a few kilometres away. There’s a reason I hadn’t visited Carthage with dad; as a history buff himself he’s enjoyed maaaaany Roman ruins in his time and being spoiled for Roman ruins in Europe he can afford to be a bit discerning about those he visits. And Carthage with its half a dozen locations, some quite unsympathetically resorted, are not the most magnificent I’ve witnessed. At the first stop I was directed to bring my bike inside the compound and was amused to watch the jeans-clad security guy run a metal detector over my panniers, and appearing to want to confiscate my wine before it was OKed by another chap in a fluro vest. Heading north I was looking for my first Tunisian camp. I feel relatively safe in Tunisia despite been warned about pickpockets in the medina - advice I’d disregarded until a friend at the hostel told me her phone had been stolen out of her hand there. So I was hesitant about the first stretch of sand I tried. I was still quite close to the population centres and with several 4X4 tracks up the beach I knew I needed to hide myself away. But I found a suitable spot amongst the vegetation in the dunes between the beach and main road. With plenty of time before sunset I took the opportunity for a dip and was pleasantly surprised at the temperature. Refreshing to have a post-ride swim now, but in just a few days I’ll be in the desert with no such luxury.
