Food Failures 🥘 Getting To Grips With Tunisian Cuisine

Day 110. 61kms (78622kms 7yrs) Such a delight to be waking up back in my tent. Hidden in the dunes I could just about hear the hear the waves from my camp spot. After a tough push of the bike back through the sand I began the ride north. Traffic here is pretty chaotic, but nothing I haven’t encountered before. There is however a type of junction that looks like a roundabout with a main road straight through it, which I haven’t worked out yet, but for the most part I was on quiet farm roads for the day. On my way I visited Utica - the first Phoenician city in North Africa. A diverting scramble about few the mosaics, but not the most mind-blowing ruins you’ll see. The ticket also included entry to the Utica museum which contained several artefacts. Last week with dad I visited Dougga which is arguably the best preserved Roman ruins in Africa so maybe it’s best to lay off other similar sites for a while. I stopped to use the wifi in a busy cafe overlooking a junction busy with motorbikes, pedestrians, and trucks stacked with hay-bales. Everyone is friendly to me (the grocer gave me my tomato and cucumber for free) but mostly leave me alone. I’d picked a road which turned out to be a very sandy track, past vast stretch of empty dunes and forest. I think at the time I even knew the mistake I was making. Eager to camp at the beach again I persevered until the beach access road whereupon the return of the bitumen brought with it swathes of beach goers. Even at 6pm the beach was still busy so I turned tail back into the forest. Being careful to stay out of the military area I made my way into the forest passing by signs forbidding drinking, and groups of men picnicking and drinking, until I found a spot reasonably distant from any access track. The deep sand had robbed me of so much time that I was finishing my dinner in the last of the light. The ‘cheese’ I’d bought was a substance I’ve never encountered before. Cheese triangles are ubiquitous here but I’d hoped I wouldn’t need to be relying on them quite yet. The street food on the other hand is superb and very affordable, so I guess I just need to adapt my routine a little.
