LeBron James is about to utter the words that will forever change the course of his career and the future of the NBA. In front of millions of viewers, in a special broadcast on ESPN titled "The Decision," LeBron, after having worn only the Cavs jersey, is about to reveal the team he will sign with as a free agent. The basketball world is waiting. Never in the history of the NBA has anything remotely similar happened. But how did we get to this moment? What led LeBron to make such a bizarre decision? We need to take a step back. The series of events that led to The Decision began in 2003, when LeBron James entered the NBA as the greatest prospect of his generation. He was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers as the first overall pick in the draft and immediately became the face of a franchise dreaming of its first NBA title. LeBron was a special talent: powerful, fast, and with an unparalleled vision. The city of Cleveland rallied around him, seeing LeBron not just as a star, but as a hope for a community struggling economically and socially. His first seasons in the league were a success on a personal level and, to some extent, on a team level. In 2007, he led the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. However, Cleveland was swept by the San Antonio Spurs 4-0. Despite the defeat, LeBron continued to improve, and expectations consequently rose. This defeat is one of many events that will lead to The Decision, but it's what happened the previous year that will have the greatest impact. In 2006, LeBron made a decision that marked the first step towards his future exit from Cleveland. Instead of accepting the offer of a five-year contract extension, he signed for only three years, aiming to become a free agent in 2010. This move gave him control of his future, putting pressure on the Cavaliers' management to build a team capable of winning a title. LeBron lived up to expectations in the years that followed. He earned numerous personal accolades, including two consecutive MVP titles in 2009 and 2010. But these awards weren't enough to quench the city's thirst for victory. Cleveland had never won an NBA championship, and despite having the best regular-season record in both seasons, they failed in the playoffs.
