Lots of points scored, many records broken, many incredible games, but still no championships. He hasn't even come close to winning one. It's an incredible burden to bear, because if you don't accomplish that feat, you're nobody in the NBA, no matter how great you are. Like many players, the chosen one is now obligated to earn it to establish himself. At that moment, he is a restricted free agent and can choose the team he wants. Leaving the Cavs would mean abandoning the franchise where he grew up and for many it would be a betrayal. Many teams want him. On July 8th, journalist Jim Grey and ESPN staged an interview in which James announced his decision. Nothing like this had ever happened before. It would be one of the few bad decisions in the media of his career. One of those that, however, would mark him for life. Even though that sort of show was practically written, LeBron's embarrassment was clearly noticeable, his difficulty in pronouncing such heavy words: "This fall... It's very difficult. This fall, I'm taking my talents to South Beach and joining the Miami Heat." You read that right: "I'm joining the Miami Heat." A sentence no fan in Ohio would have wanted to hear. “I gave everything to the Cavs, but I feel like Miami may be my best chance to win in years.” It’s both a professional and personal choice, because in doing so, he joins two players who had become great friends of his at the Olympics: Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. He joins two other All-Stars who had been his rivals just months earlier. He probably chooses the easiest path to the ring. The press and fans don’t forgive him for it; in the NBA, no great player in the past had ever considered teaming up with their opponents to win. Not Larry Bird, not Magic Johnson, not Isiah Thomas, and not Michael Jordan, who harshly commented: “There’s no way I could call Larry and Magic to play together. Honestly, I was trying to beat them.” But things are different now; the league is changing. That hour-long show is practically an unnecessary self-proclamation, where he essentially affirms that the Cavaliers have never managed to build a top-level roster. Owner Dan Gilbert can only do one thing to protect his image: attack him: "He grew up in our country and abandoned us. Cavs fans, you don't deserve this betrayal. He's shown what he is. Remember what he did in the last games against Boston: he hid, he abandoned his teammates. No superstar has ever played like that." LeBron now has no excuses; that choice forces him to win. If they lose, he knows he'll be blamed. He knows the burden will fall on him. It's always been this way, and it likely will be until the last day he steps on the court. He chose this path himself since 2002, when he tattooed the nickname given to him by Sports Illustrated on his back: The Chosen One. Come the day of his introduction to the Heat, James likely makes another communication error. Miami's new Big Three are on stage, and many notice that center stage isn't LeBron, wearing the number 6, his new jersey number, but Dwayne Wade, the only one with a ring on his finger. The more malicious say that Flash will be the leader, not the boy from Ohio. The chosen one is asked if the three of them together will win a title, and he proclaims: "Not one...not two...not three...not four...not five...not six...not seven, I really believe it." That announcement, besides clearly explaining that his goal now is to surpass MJ, increases the antipathy many had toward him. That choice has significant repercussions on the city of Cleveland, with some fans even taking their own lives. LeBron is likely scarred by the events that occurred in what, until a few days earlier, was his home. The home that had become a family. Where everyone loved him. Now, however, we have to think about the new year and the imperative is to win.
