The Real Reason Bassists HATE the Metronome
DESCRIPTION A lot of bass players hate the metronome — it's boring, robotic, tedious. But most of them don't actually know why they hate it. In this video I break down the three separate skills that make up "good rhythm," and the third one is the real reason so many bassists loathe playing to a click. We start with pulse (keeping a steady heartbeat, demonstrated on Psycho Killer), then move to subdivision (playing in the gaps between the beat, demonstrated on Don't Stop Believin'). But the skill that actually separates tight players from everyone else is adjusting your time to someone else's — because nobody has perfect time, and the metronome won't adjust to you. I run a real experiment: same bass line, same take, once without the click revealed and once with it exposed, so you can hear exactly what "not lining up" sounds like. If you want to start building this skill, set your metronome to 80 BPM and work through pulse, then eighth notes, then full awareness of the downbeat. It's frustrating at first, but it's one of the most efficient ways to develop the listening skill that makes bands sound tight.
