[KARLSRUHE] – Hazardous materials accident causes complete closure of the A8 near Karlsruhe: Tanker truck carrying toxic solvents overturns on the highway towards Stuttgart – The truck was carrying highly flammable liquid hazardous material; some drops leaked, causing an odor nuisance – The accident site is cordoned off over a wide area – Special forces arrive in chemical protective suits An overturned tanker truck carrying hazardous materials caused a major emergency response lasting several hours on the A8 near Karlsbad on Tuesday evening. After toxic solvents leaked from the vehicle, the highway in the direction of Stuttgart had to be completely closed for several hours. At around 6:45 p.m., the fire department, ambulance service, and police were alerted to the accident on the A8 between Karlsruhe and Pforzheim. Upon arrival of the first responders, a tanker truck was lying on its side, blocking all lanes. The driver sustained minor injuries in the accident and was taken to a hospital by ambulance. The tanker truck was carrying several compartments of liquid solvents. Small amounts of hazardous materials leaked from two of the four chambers, causing an unpleasant odor. ... "Because the substances involved were toxic, odorous, and highly flammable, the scene was cordoned off over a wide area," said Michaela Hofmann, spokesperson for the Karlsruhe Fire Department, at the scene. Specialized emergency personnel worked in chemical protective suits to seal the leaks and prevent further spread. A total of 19 firefighters from the professional fire department and 14 members of the volunteer fire departments from Wettersbach and Stupferich were deployed. They were supported by the ambulance service, the highway patrol, the highway maintenance department, and a recovery company. After the leaks were sealed, the remaining cargo was pumped into a replacement vehicle by specialists. The truck was then recovered.
