In Venezuela, at least 164 people have died and more than 971 have been injured following two strong earthquakes, according to government figures. The US Geological Survey estimates the death toll, based on its forecasting models, to be in the thousands. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck the country within a minute of each other, causing massive damage. Numerous aftershocks are further exacerbating the situation. Buildings collapsed, and the airport in Caracas was severely damaged and closed. The state of La Guaira is particularly affected. Interim President Rodríguez has declared a state of emergency.
