Wife and mother of three, Ileana (Teresita) Guaita tells us about the profound transformation she experienced following the breast cancer she was diagnosed with a few years ago. She is convinced that her life of faith lacked depth, but she kept putting it off. In a way, she asserts, the Lord was preparing her for what was to come with that fatal diagnosis. She liked to plan, to have everything under control; she was calculating, a professional of recognized worth, and had a wonderful family. But God was second-best in her life and her plans. She soon realized that "all those lies the world sells us to make me happy were of no use to me during my illness." In the midst of her illness, with all that it entails, the Lord revealed to Ileana all His saving power, His Fatherhood, His unconditional and infinite Love. She abandoned herself to Him, learned to offer her suffering, and felt great relief. Ileana assures us that "when you feel unconditionally loved by God, just for being, that's when your life changes." She allowed it to transform her heart. She lived "a kind of spiritual childhood," accompanied by Saint Therese, "because God wants us as children, abandoned and trusting in his will." And there, even during her illness, she began to discover great love, beauty, and authenticity around her, in people of all walks of life and in the smallest details. Everything mundane became something extraordinary: "You stop navel-gazing, you begin to live the Gospel and see God in everything." She even offered her death, if that was what God's plan had in store for it. All she asked was that God help her and not let go of her hand. Thus, parallel to the course of her illness, her intimate relationship with the Lord—who has a great sense of humor, says Ileana Therese—was forged in all three persons, and with the Virgin Mary, with whom she also established a new relationship: a mother and a confidant. On the path of her profound vital and spiritual transformation, God always fulfilled his promise. He has never ceased to accompany her and give her the tools to sustain herself in pain and in faith. She traveled a path of learning and inner healing. She allowed herself to be cared for by her loved ones and discovered that she became a better mother and wife the less she did and the more she paid attention to them. In the process, her husband and children have also undergone a spiritual transformation, each at their own pace and in their own way. The cancer is gone now. But we all know that this never means being 100% free. What she does know is where true happiness lies. She nourishes herself with the Eucharist, goes to Confession (how important it is to receive Forgiveness and learn to forgive, says Ileana); she attends Adoration, prayer, and the Holy Rosary, and often remembers the lives of saints such as Thérèse of the Child Jesus and Saint Claude Colombière SJ, apostle of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of trusting abandonment to God's will.
