One was a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself: “God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.” The tax collector, however, standing at a distance, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” The Word of the Lord Holy Spirit, enlighten our understanding, so that as we read or study Sacred Scripture, we may feel the presence of God the Father, who manifests himself through your Word. Open our hearts to discern God's will and how to make it a reality in our daily actions. Instruct us in your ways so that, mindful of your Word, we may be signs of your presence in the world.
