When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that time on, this disciple took her into his home. After this, knowing that everything was now finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of sour wine was standing there. And, attaching a sponge soaked in vinegar to a hyssop branch, they held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished.” And bowing his head, he gave up his spirit. The Jews, therefore, since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water flowed out. The Word of the Lord Holy Spirit, enlighten our understanding, so that when we read or study Sacred Scripture, we may feel the presence of God the Father who manifests himself through your Word. Open our hearts to discern God's will and how to make it a reality in our daily actions. Instruct us in your ways so that, mindful of your Word, we may be signs of your presence in the world.
