With a sense of smell and mobility superior to humans, 39 rescue dogs across the country have saved 151 lives over the past three years. However, they retire at an average age of 8 to 9, becoming senior dogs approaching seventy in human years and beginning the "second act of their dog life." While there are happy cases like Jeonjin, who is adopted by a firefighter handler and enjoys a peaceful daily life surrounded by family love, the burden of medical expenses resulting from a lifetime of accumulated fatigue and ailments due to old age falls entirely on the adopter. As seen in the cases of the cloned rescue dog Dasol and the late Suan, the cost of treatment and medication is substantial; yet, there is a lack of government-level support systems for retired volunteer animals, and relevant legislation remains pending in the National Assembly.
