Grieg: Violin Sonata No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 45 — Kreisler & Rachmaninoff (Restored)
A restored historical recording of Edvard Grieg’s Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45, performed by Fritz Kreisler and Sergei Rachmaninoff. This celebrated Kreisler–Rachmaninoff collaboration was recorded in 1928 and remains one of the most compelling chamber documents either artist left on disc. Grieg’s Third Violin Sonata is the largest and most dramatic of his three violin sonatas, a work that combines Romantic sweep with the rhythmic drive and melodic profile so often associated with his mature style. The sonata unfolds in three movements: Allegro molto ed appassionato, Allegretto espressivo alla Romanza, and Allegro animato. Kreisler brings warmth, elegance, and vocal phrasing to the violin line, while Rachmaninoff’s piano playing gives the score unusual weight, clarity, and propulsion. The result is a performance of great intensity in the outer movements, with a Romanza that sings without losing structural tension. For this restoration, the aim was to preserve the body of the violin, the depth of the piano, and the natural dramatic arc of the performance while reducing surface noise, harshness, and transfer fatigue. The intention is not to modernize the interpretation, but to reveal more of its tone, balance, and immediacy for present-day listening. #Grieg #Kreisler #Rachmaninoff #ViolinSonata #ClassicalMusic #HistoricRecording #AudioRestoration #78rpm
