For me, a wet, thawing day was just the thing to try and see how to light a small fire outdoors without many tools and, above all, without any tinder I had brought with me. It started with gathering wood. I didn't have an axe or a large knife with me, so how would I split my firewood into smaller pieces? Many people already know the trick with birch bark, but I wanted to try lighting my collected tinder with a firesteel without using any birch bark at all.
