The last five psalms—146, 147, 148, 149, 150—open and close with a single word: "Hallelujah"—"Praise God." And the first of these five begins with a warning that resonates more poignantly today than three thousand years ago: "Do not put your trust in princes." Not in politicians. Not in bosses. Not in rich patrons. Not in "the right people." The king—the one who was himself a "prince," the pinnacle of human power—speaks plainly: man is an unreliable support. Even the strongest. 🧠 PSALM ANALYSIS ACCORDING TO MALBIM Psalm 146 – 10 verses. About the only support that never fails. 1–2. PRAISE THE LORD, O MY SOUL. I WILL PRAISE THE LORD AS LORD LIVES; I WILL SING TO MY GOD AS LORD LIVES. David is not addressing the crowd, the choir, or the audience. To his own soul. According to Malbim, this is crucial: before calling others to praise, a person must awaken praise within themselves. Praise that hasn't entered into one's own soul is empty. And twice in a row: "as long as I live," "as long as I exist." Praise is not an event or a mood. It is a mode of existence, activated throughout one's entire life. 3. DO NOT TRUST IN PRINCES, IN THE SON OF MAN, IN WHOM THERE IS NO SALVATION The central warning of the psalm. According to Malbim, note the order: first, "princes"—those with power and resources. Then, "the son of man" in general, any person. David moves from the specific to the general: not only do you not trust in the strong—no person, in principle, can be your ultimate support. Not because people are bad. But because every person has a limit—the next verse explains it. 4. HIS SPIRIT GOES OUT, AND HE RETURNES TO HIS GROUND; IN THAT DAY ALL HIS THOUGHTS PERISH This is the limit. Mortality. According to Malbim, the key word here is "thoughts" (eshtonotav): not only does the person himself pass away, but all his plans, promises, and intentions do too. The most sincere protector, the most faithful ally, the most reliable partner—all their guarantees last only as long as they live. Building a life on a person is building on something that will disappear in a day. 5. BLESSED IS THE ONE WHOSE HELP IS THE GOD OF JACOB, WHOSE HOPE IS IN THE LORD HIS GOD A sharp contrast. After "do not trust," this is the One in whom to trust. According to Malbim, it is important why it says "the God of Jacob": of all the patriarchs, Jacob endured the longest tribulations—his flight from Esau, his years with Laban, the loss of Joseph. And in all his troubles, God saw him through to the end. "The God of Jacob" means: God tested by the most difficult biography. 6. HE WHO CREATED HEAVEN AND EARTH, THE SEA AND ALL THAT IS IN THEM, AND WHO KEEPS FAITHFUL FOREVER This is the difference between God and a prince. A prince promises and dies. God created heaven and earth and remains faithful forever. According to Malbim, the combination of these two qualities in one verse is no coincidence: power without faithfulness is terrible, and faithfulness without power is useless. Only the Almighty possesses both: the absolute power of the Creator and the absolute trustworthiness of the One who keeps His word. 7–9. HE WHO EXECUTES JUDGMENT FOR THE OFFENDED, WHO GIVEN BREAD TO THE HUNGRY; THE LORD FREES PRISONERS, THE LORD OPENS THE EYES OF THE BLIND, THE LORD STRAIGHTENS THE BENT, THE LORD LOVES THE RIGHTEOUS. THE LORD PROTECTS STRANGE PEOPLE, HE SUPPORTS ORPHANS AND WIDOWS. Look at what the Creator of heaven and earth is preoccupied with. Not emperors. Not victors. Not "successful people." The oppressed. The hungry. Prisoners. The blind. The bent. Strangers. Orphans. Widows. According to Malbim, this list is proof of verse 6: God's greatness is not revealed by His being at the top, but by His attention being with those below. Princes surround themselves with the strong. The Most High surrounds Himself with the weak. And note: the Lord's name is repeated seven times in a row—like seven blows hammering home one thought: He does this personally, not a system, not chance, not luck. 10.
