One man's broken heart – and all the stars in the universe. He who counts billions of galaxies and calls every star by name—He binds the wounds of a broken heart. Personally. Like a doctor bending over one patient. This is the main revelation of Psalm 147: God's greatness is measured not only by the scale of the cosmos—it is measured by His attention to the pain of one small person. 🧠 MALBIM ANALYSIS OF THE PSALM HALLELUJAH! FOR IT IS GOOD TO SING TO OUR GOD, FOR PRAISE IS PLEASANT—IT IS APPROPRIATE The second of the five final Hallelujah psalms that conclude the entire Tehillim. According to Malbim, there are three words, each with its own meaning: "good" (tov)—praise is beneficial to the singer, it changes him from within; "pleasant" (naim)—it is sweet, not a burden, but a delight; "It is fitting" (nava)—it is appropriate, correct by the very nature of things. Praise to God is a rare instance when the useful, the pleasant, and the correct coincide in a single action. 2. THE LORD IS BUILDING JERUSALEM, HE WILL GATHER THE EXILES OF ISRAEL According to Malbim, pay attention to the verb tense: "builds" is present, "will gather" is future. People usually think the opposite: first the people will gather, then the city will be built. Here is Divine order: Jerusalem is being built now, even before the exiles have gathered. The Almighty prepares the house before the inhabitants return. The solution to your problem begins to be built before you return from your exile. 3. HEALS THE BROKE-HEARTED AND BINDS UP THEIR WOUNDS The most tender verse in the entire final five psalms. According to Malbim, there are two distinct actions: "heals" (rofeh)—working with the illness itself, from within; "bandages" (mechabesh)—caring for the wound from the outside, preventing further damage while it heals. The Almighty works with a broken heart like a true physician: He treats the cause—and simultaneously protects the wound from further blows. And note: a broken heart here is not a shame or a weakness. It is a diagnosis with which one comes to the Doctor. The sages say: there is no vessel more whole than a broken heart—it is through the crack that the Light enters. 4. HE COUNTS THE NUMBER OF STARS, CALLS THEM ALL BY NAME And immediately after the broken heart—the stars. This proximity is the message. According to Malbim, "calls by name" means: He knows the unique essence of each one. For an astronomer, stars are statistics. For the Creator, each is an individual with a name and purpose. And here is the power of the connection between verses 3 and 4: if each of the billions of stars has a name before Him, how much more precisely does He know the name of every broken heart? You are not lost in the statistics of seven billion people. He who does not confuse the stars will not lose you. ✡️ Kabbalistic Depth The order of the verses is a ladder of consolation. Look at the sequence: builds Jerusalem (general redemption) → gathers the exiles (the return of the people) → heals hearts (each person's personal pain) → counts the stars (the entire cosmos). Tradition sees a crucial principle here: the redemption of the people and the healing of one heart are not two separate processes. They are one work of one God, occurring simultaneously on all levels—from the galaxy to your wound. Exile is not only geographical. "Exiles of Israel" (nidhei Yisrael) literally means "those who are driven away," "those who are cast out." A person can live in Jerusalem and yet be in exile—from themselves, from their calling, from God.
