I walked through Zojoji Temple and Shiba Park in Minato Ward, Tokyo, Japan. Passing through an ancient temple at the base of Tokyo Tower, I gazed at the area that was once the sea, passing people lying on the winter-dead grass, listening to the feel of the cobblestones under my feet and the voices of sutra chanters coming from far away.For some reason, in this place where the city and memory intersect, I felt a sense of nostalgia. The sky in Minato Ward, in the middle of Tokyo, is wide. Rather than being visible through a gap in a skyscraper, it looks like a gaping space directly above. Under such a sky, I was walking toward the main gate of Zojoji Temple. The gate is under construction and the usual lead lines are blocked. I'm lost. But even that hesitation feels somehow natural in this city. Tokyo is a city where walking doesn't always go as planned. Zojoji is a Jodo sect temple founded in 1393, and is also the family temple of the Tokugawa shogunate. However, there is no sense of intimidation. It was burnt down in an air raid and destroyed in an earthquake, but even so, the only things that remain are people's prayers. As I walked along the approach to the shrine, I saw small grass growing in the gaps between the stone pavements, which looked incredibly adorable. Under the sky, sutra chanting was carried by the wind, and pigeons were walking on the roof. It is said that this area was once the sea. When you look at it with this in mind, the cliff-like height differences that remain on the grounds of Zojoji Temple begin to look like the remnants of a coastline. The flow of spring water behind Tokyo Tower may be a memory of a time when it was the border between land and sea. When you think about it this way, the modern cityscape appears to float through you like a thin veil. Enter Shiba Park. People lying on the withered grass. Some people are looking at their smartphones with their shoulders hunched, while others are soaking up the sun with their eyes closed. Even though none of them did anything special, their appearance left a lasting impression on me for some reason. It occurred to me that the city of Tokyo is built on the presence of other people. A long time ago, I went to Tokyo Tower on a school trip. But I don't remember anything. However, when I looked at it while walking this time, I realized that the steel frame was exactly where my ``old self'' looked up, and that only time seemed to stretch far away. In this video, we will take a walk through such ""edges"" of Tokyo. The city I thought I knew on the map shows an unfamiliar face beneath my feet. The sound of the wind, the coolness of the stone steps, the light of spring water. All of these things I couldn't have encountered without walking.
