The Mafia Underboss Who Helped Build an Empire (Michele Miranda)
Michele Miranda Michele “Big Mike” Miranda was one of the most influential figures in the early history of the Genovese crime family. A close ally of Vito Genovese, Miranda served as underboss and was widely regarded as one of the key administrators of the organization during the 1950s and 1960s. Authorities and organized crime investigators linked Miranda to racketeering operations, illegal gambling enterprises, loansharking activities, and the administration of Mafia-controlled criminal networks throughout New York. Law enforcement also associated him with labor racketeering and influence over waterfront, trucking, and business-related operations that generated substantial profits for organized crime. Miranda's name surfaced repeatedly during investigations into Mafia leadership structures, including inquiries following the infamous Apalachin Meeting, where many top American Mafia figures were identified by authorities. Unlike some later mob leaders, Miranda was known more as an organizer and administrator than a public figure, helping oversee criminal enterprises from behind the scenes.
