History Talk: The Uttoxeter Canal
To town wide celebration, the Uttoxeter Canal opened in September 1811. Linking Uttoxeter to the Caldon Canal and onto Trent and Mersey Canal. It was hoped by many in the town that it would result in a revival of the Uttoxeter's fortunes. This never came to pass however as the canal was closed and filled in less than 40 year later. Today only small parts of it remain. This talk explores the interesting story this short-lived commercial failure. From its’ origins in trying to block the construction of a rival canal to its closure and partial conversion into a railway line. Please check our website and Facebook page for new about upcoming future talks and events. Support for this talk was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Uttoxeter Heritage Trust would like to thank them for their continued support during this difficult time
