Hello travelers, how are you? Today we visit Granadilla, a small Spanish town located in the province of Cáceres, in the autonomous community of Extremadura. Founded by Muslims in the 9th century as a strategic stronghold for the area, it is located on a hill overlooking a vast area and is an obligatory stopover along the Vía de la Plata. According to information found on the internet, in its heyday, this town had more than a thousand inhabitants. We're going to explore this medieval walled town, perhaps the most beautiful of the so-called abandoned towns in Spain, although it is not abandoned but uninhabited. It boasts a beautiful architectural heritage. Granadilla was expropriated and evacuated in the mid-20th century when it became a flood zone due to the construction of the Gabriel y Galán reservoir. However, the town has never been flooded, not even when the reservoir was full. In 1980, the village was declared a historic-artistic site, and four years later, in 1984, it was selected for inclusion in the Abandoned Village Recovery Program. Most of the houses are still standing, some of them undergoing renovation or reconstruction, and its castle is a true architectural gem. It's worth noting that during a visit, the village is clean and free of graffiti; entry hours are regulated by authorized personnel.
