That is, until you realize you don't have the right stand. In this video, I'll tell you about the four most common types of studio stands for photographers. 1. Floor or Low Stand. This stand is located close to the floor and is ideal for situations where you need to direct light from below or hide the source behind your subject. I use this type of stand in three main situations: first, when lighting a background, placing the stand behind the model; second, when lighting smoke, also placing the stand behind the model but with the reflector facing the model; and third, when lighting a subject from below, using the light to fill shadows. Of course, there are other uses for these stands, too; for example, in this video, I placed an highlighter/reflector on a low stand. 2. Standard Stand. This is the most common and simple lighting stand. The advantage of these stands is that they can be used for a variety of purposes and are relatively lightweight and portable. Use them to set up your main light, background light, fill light—any light. BUT! Remember that their advantage of light weight is also their weakness. Always take this into account when placing heavy light modifiers on these stands. 3. C-stands: Whenever you need more reliability, stability, and compactness at the bottom, consider this stand. If you're planning to shoot outdoors, this is also the best choice, as a C-stand is more wind-resistant and has a raised leg that can be placed on a rock or step. Don't forget a sand bag for even more stability. I use C-stands to hold large light modifiers and in situations where a standard stand would interfere with the shot. Are there any downsides to C-stands? They're heavier and less portable than standard stands. 4. Crane (must have wheels). This is an essential stand for any photo studio, as it offers several advantages over standard stands and C-stands. Only a boom light allows you to position large light modifiers parallel to the floor, such as a 150cm octabox, a 120cm parabolic softbox, or a 200cm softbox. Working with the right boom light is a joy, as it has wheels for moving it around the room and positioning it in the optimal spot. The horizontal stand, or what I call the arm, has a wheel for additional adjustment of the light source's angle. I use a boom light when I want to backlight a model with a grid reflector, but do so in a way that the stand isn't visible. You can also hang a laser or spotlight from a boom light. One major drawback of a boom light is its weight. It's like this: great advantages come with great weight. Therefore, use a boom light only when other stands are clearly not suitable for your lighting scheme. That's all I've covered about stands, so let's move on to practical applications and use all four types of stands in specific lighting schemes. I've prepared two lighting setups using all the stands. Take a look and use them in practice.
