A white background is very popular in photography, especially for catalog and product shoots, so today I'll talk a little about how to remove shadows and create a white background in the studio. In this video, I take my first photo with a single hard light source and decide to remove the shadow behind the model. I try different options step by step and show you the results. This work didn't take place in a cyclorama, but in a room with a white floor, walls, and a white ceiling. I used only @GODOXGlobal strobe lights. I could have shown you working options or diagrams right away, but I wanted you to see everything in my example instead of wasting time experimenting with different lighting techniques. The first option is obvious. The model simply moves away from the wall, maintaining the distance between the flash and the model. In this case, the shadow will move, which is acceptable for some situations. However, this will result in the model being shot against a gray background. In the second option, when the model returns to her original position closer to the wall, I decide to add a second light source that will illuminate the wall behind the model. If we set this light source without overexposing (without blowing out the shadow on the wall so that the background turns white), we'll get the following effect: The background will become brighter, but the model's shadow will remain. This is because we don't have a light-shaping attachment that would illuminate only the shadow. This option isn't suitable, so we move on to the next one. The third option is to increase the power of the second flash source so that it overexposes both the model's shadow and the background. However, in this case, pay attention to the following: Does the light from the second flash hit the model? If it does, then decide whether you want this effect, because it won't be a mistake. For example, in some cases, you can use one light source to illuminate the background and backlight the model. If this backlight or sidelight is bothersome, use flags (there's a video on the channel) or ask the model to take a few steps forward. The model will also be exposed to reflected light from the wall, and its effect will depend on the power of the second flash and the model's distance from the wall. If there are significant highlights in the model's hair or along the model's contours, ask the model to move away from the wall. A fourth option for eliminating shadows in a photograph is to switch from a hard to a soft attachment. That's what I did. For such soft or shadow-free light, you'll need the largest possible light source: a 150 or 200mm octabox, a 200mm softbox, a 200mm umbrella, or a large frost frame. By lighting the model with one large light source, we virtually eliminate unwanted shadows in the photograph, simulating soft daylight, but depending on the distance between the model and the background, the background may be gray. There are times when only a white background is needed, so we try other options. A fifth option is to connect two reflectors to our large soft light source. In one version, these reflectors shine onto the background behind the model, and in the other, they shine onto the white ceiling. Depending on which option you choose, the image will change. The ceiling-mounted reflector option is a great way to simulate soft, natural fill light, but I can offer some advice from experience. :) Sometimes photographers who prefer this lighting setup become so accustomed to it that they don't even notice the ceiling color. :) You and I understand that if you light a wood-colored ceiling, the reflected light won't be 5400-5600 Kelvin, but rather warmer. In short, we've achieved the desired result, but there's another option, which I showed in this video. Sometimes you might find yourself in a situation where all your octaboxes, large softboxes, or umbrellas are occupied or unavailable. Then try option number six. Place a large white flag or two small ones together, and set up a flash unit in front of them. That's it, your soft light source is ready. If this option produces too harsh a light, increase the distance between the flash and the flag. This will spread the light over a larger area, increasing the light source and, therefore, making it softer. That's all for now. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments, and I'll answer them. The shoot took place in Novosibirsk, at the Amare photo studio www.amarestage.ru Model from the Russian Shine modeling agency. lav_anna_23 #howtoremoveshadowfromphotography #photographytraining #whitebackground #photographylessons #howthiswasshot #pulsedlight #lightingpatterns
