🌙 A rainy late night at Gyujanggak, the royal library of Joseon. All have left, and only a lone scholar remains, working late into the night. Occasional footsteps echo as he rises to search for another book… the quiet scratch of a brush on paper fills the silence. 📜 Regulations of Gyujanggak: Do not step onto the wooden floor unless on official duty. Always wear official headgear while working. No one, regardless of rank, may enter Gyujanggak unless they are a designated scholar. After ascending the throne, King Jeongjo built a two-story library in the most scenic and quiet part of Changdeokgung Palace—this was Gyujanggak. It served as a royal library and academic institute, a repository of written culture and state knowledge. King Jeongjo recruited talented individuals regardless of class, encouraging them to study and reflect alongside him. They discussed matters of state and the struggles of the people. Thus, Gyujanggak functioned as a library, research institute, and policy advisory body. Scholars of Gyujanggak, called Gakshin, had direct access to the king and participated in royal debates. They held the authority to impeach corrupt officials and enjoyed legal immunity while on duty.
