💫 A deep night in Joseon. The sky is filled with sparkling stars, accompanied by the calls of owls and insects, the gentle breeze, the creaking sound of the honcheonsigye (celestial globe), and a lone astronomer silently recording the heavens... 600 years ago, Joseon reached one of the most advanced levels of astronomy in the world. Kim Dam and others calculated the times of sunrise and sunset in Hanyang, as well as the length of day and night. They even discovered that the winter solstice daylight in Hanyang was over 14 minutes longer than in Beijing, which lies further north. They also precisely calculated the length of a year as 365.2425 days (actual: 365.2422) and a lunar month as 29.530593 days. In August of the 29th year of King Sejong’s reign (1447), they predicted and observed both a solar eclipse during the new moon and a lunar eclipse during the full moon, then recorded the differences between predictions and observations. Records in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty even contain data that allows modern scientists to estimate the brightness of a supernova and analyze its type. The honcheonui (armillary sphere) was a device used to observe celestial movement and functioned as an astronomical clock.
